Absolute Software Extends Asset management, Data Protection and Geolocation Capabilities to the Popular Android Platform
Vancouver, Canada: February 2, 2011 – Absolute® Software Corporation (“Absolute” or the “Company”) (TSX: ABT), the leading provider of firmware-based, patented, computer theft recovery, data protection and secure computer lifecycle management solutions announced today it launched a closed beta of Computrace® Mobile for the Android platform. This new solution will deliver asset administration, data protection and geolocation tracking for the popular Android line of devices, which generally includes tablets and smartphones.
Computrace Mobile for the Android platform will deliver:
- Reduced operational costs associated with managing mobile devices by leveraging the Computrace platform’s integrated Customer Center reporting for hardware, software and user information.
- An additional layer of data protection and increased compliance with government data breach laws through remote Data Delete capabilities.
- The ability to geolocate a device and display it on an internet map including current and historical locations*.
During the beta testing period, some of Absolute’s current commercial customers have privileged, pre-release access to Computrace Mobile for Android at no additional cost. Interested journalists and product reviewers may also request a demonstration of the solution prior to its general availability.
“Our customers are facing the growing challenge of managing multiple platforms. In this complex environment, IT organizations need a unified solution that allows them to track and protect multiple devices on different platforms across the entire organization. Computrace Mobile delivers that capability to organizations, providing them with a complete view into their mobile landscape,” said Rob Chase, chief operating officer at Absolute Software. “As our customers strive to get the most out of their mobile computing investments, our solution will provide them with a single pane of glass for the visibility and protection they need to reduce operational costs and losses due to loss, data breach compliance, and inefficient allocation."
Computrace Mobile is supported on the following platforms: Windows Mobile® 5, 6, 6.1, 6.2, and 6.5 handheld devices; Symbian – S60 Third Edition and later releases; and BlackBerry® Mobile Versions 4.5 and later. Absolute Manage Mobile Device Management allows organizations to manage the Apple® iOS devices (iPad™, iPhone®, iPod touch®) in their deployment.
*Geolocation is only performed with the prior consent of the device owner on corporate liable devices.
How Computrace Technology Works
Computrace products are powered by the Absolute Software patented Computrace persistence technology. When embedded in the firmware of computers from leading computer manufacturers, Computrace can survive operating system re-installations, as well as hard-drive reformats, replacements and re-imaging, helping to ensure that the service is there when it’s needed most.* The Computrace Agent is virtually undetectable and calls home to the Absolute Monitoring Center with IT asset management information including the physical location of each device. If a computer is reported stolen, the Absolute Theft Recovery Team works on behalf of the customer to gather evidence from the computer to identify the thief’s location, and then works with local police to get the computer back. Customers can also remotely delete data, freeze a device, and remotely retrieve files to secure the device (and the data it contains) – a reliable contingency in case other data protection solutions fail.
