Tullow Oil Protects Exploration Data with Absolute

By: Absolute Editorial Team | 7/22/2014

Tullow Oil is an independent oil and gas exploration company, with a footprint in 24 countries with a global workforce of over 2,000 people, approximately half of those in African operations. Headquartered in London, Tullow Oil has corporate offices in Ireland, Ghana, Uganda and South Africa.

Andy Harper, Device Management Analyst at Tullow Oil, describes how the company uses Absolute to track and secure sensitive company data that, in the wrong hands, could affect the company share price and compromise security at Tullow Oil’s mining sites around the world.

As Andy notes in the customer video, the 4,000 laptops used by Tullow Oil employees can get to some “pretty wild places,”  and tracking those devices is an important aspect of securing corporate data.

“Theft can be a problem, working in some of these places we do. The temptation of high value equipment can be too much for some people. Using the alerting features of Absolute, we can be alerted when a machine name changes and we can be alerted if it’s been compromised. We need to go and find it. If we can’t find it, or we know it’s been stolen, we can track it, identify who’s using it, we can lock it down, we can wipe the data.

If you can imagine the sort of data being accumulated on these devices while you’re exploring for oil… they can be very valuable in the wrong hands."
