The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) recently released a report for individuals and businesses called Annual Track 2011, a study that monitors the awareness and understanding of the Data Protection Act (DPA) and the Freedom of Information Act.
The survey shows that more businesses, nearly three-quarters, are aware of DPA requirements to keep personal information secure, but public confidence on how personal information is being handled continues to decline. Less than half of individuals believe that organizations process data in a fair and proper manner.
According to the latest information, data security breaches are on the rise in the private sector: 58% more breaches were reported to the ICO in 2011/12 than in the same period last year.
It would seem that public perception of information handling is in line with reality, in that breaches continue to rise.
