How Are You Securing Your Smartphone?

So, you have a smartphone that you've likely spent hundreds of dollars on. You carry it around with you all the time, like carrying a wad of cash in your pocket. Inside that device you have a wealth of valuable information: contacts, passwords, personal information, emails, business information, photos and more. iPhone, Android, Windows, BlackBerry… whatever you have, chances are you haven't made any steps to protect it.

113 cell phones are lost or stolen every minute in the US. FCC estimates that 30-40% of all robberies in major cities are cell-phone related. According to new research from UK-based Mobile Insurance, the chance that your phone will be lost, stolen or broken in some way is 81%. Despite this, most people choose not to insure or otherwise protect the device, let alone the data on it. 

The survey revealed that 21% of people surveyed believed the phone warranty would cover things going wrong with their phone, including broken screens, theft and loss, which simply is not the case. Other reasons include not 'getting around to it' or believing it was not needed.

Though I personally have not had a device lost or stolen, I was very thankful to have an extended warranty when I shattered the screen on my phone!
