Half of Employees will BYOD by 2017

Gartner predicts that by 2017, half of employers will require employees to supply their own device for work purposes. In the Gartner report, "Bring Your Own Device: The Facts and the Future," 38% of companies expect to stop providing corporately-owned devices by 2016. In addition to the growth in BYOD devices, Gartner believes that company subsides will decrease and perhaps even disappear.

"BYOD strategies are the most radical change to the economics and the culture of client computing in business in decades," said David Willis, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. "The benefits of BYOD include creating new mobile workforce opportunities, increasing employee satisfaction, and reducing or avoiding costs."

BYOD is currently most prevalent in midsize to large organizations, though it also enables small companies to go mobile without a huge investment. Companies in the US are twice as likely to allow BYOD as those in Europe.

Gartner's predictions for BYOD devices extends beyond smartphones to also include tablets and laptops, allowing employees to extend the benefits of BYOD to all of their devices. Gartner cites some of the benefits of BYOD as:

  • creating new mobile workforce opportunities
  • increasing employee satisfaction
  • reducing / avoiding costs
  • increased innovation
  • increased efficiencies in areas such as time sheets, self-service applications, help desk

Gartner's survey reveals that most businesses do not understand the benefits of BYOD, with only 22% of CIOs believing they've made a strong business case, which can complicate IT planning. Security continues to be the top BYOD concern, with data leakage being the most acute concern.

BYOD does not need to be complicated and security concerns can be effectively managed with the right services.
