In the InfoWatch Global Data Leakage Report for 2012, 934 confidential information leaks were recorded and reported in the media worldwide, up 16% over the previous year. These leaks compromised 1.8 billion records and caused direct losses more than $37.8 million. While it should be of note that accidental leaks is decreasing, "organizational procedures" in area such as handling of hard copy documents, user access and data management (including endpoint management for data on mobile devices) is more at play in causing these breaches.
Natalya Kaspersky, co-founder of Kaspersky Lab and CEO of InfoWatch, was recently interviewed by the Gulf News, noting that insider threats are growing and organizations need data loss prevention (DLP) technology to survive.
DLP technology is getting more and more important. More than 80 per cent of the companies do not know what kind of information they have.
Data loss prevention (DLP) is the plan and system designed to detect potential data breaches and prevent them through monitoring, detecting & blocking sensitive data.
