Customers Mistrust Corporate Info Security Practices

By: Absolute Team | 2/2/2011

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) in the UK recently surveyed 1,200 people about their privacy. The survey found, not surprisingly, that 80% of people are concerned protecting their personal information online.

The survey also highlighted a growing mistrust of companies when it comes to information security practices. 96% are concerned that organizations do not keep their details secure and 60% believe they've lost control of the way their personal information is collected and processed. A high proportion of users stated concern (many with 'very concerned') over the the security of their information within the organization or possibly being sold outside the organization.

The ICO re-launched its personal information toolkit with some helpful tips for consumers to safeguard their personal information and how to spot identity theft.

You can read the full report here as well as a survey of organizations on the awareness of the Data Protection Act and Freedom of Information Act.

Just a note: If you, like me, are on a Mac, you'll find that the ICO website doesn't work well on Firefox. You'll need to use Safari to browse specific links. ;)
