Breaches in Education Sector Up 40%

With 2016 nearly behind us already, we’re starting to see some patterns in data breach trends that are rather concerning. One such pattern has been the consistent increase in data breaches affecting the education sector, up 39.6% over the same time period in 2015. The education sector has seen the largest percentage growth in data breaches in 2016 so far, followed by businesses and medical / healthcare organizations. Breaches in 2016 continue to outpace those of 2015, currently at 858 breaches, a 35% increase over last year’s record figures.

According to the Beazley Breach Insights report released recently, hacking is a growing menace for higher education with 46% of breaches caused by hacking or malware. We’ve scanned through the educational data breaches for 2016 and have noted some other patterns. Although full details are not always disclosed, or even fully discovered, insider activities were at the root of many cyber attacks. Credentials were compromised or, in an overwhelming number of incidents, someone fell prey to a phishing scam. If we look outside cyber incidents, the insider threat was responsible for even more breaches when files were emailed, accidentally posted, or left somewhere inappropriate.

The education sector is clearly become a top target for cyber criminals; gaining visibility into data, no matter where it resides, is key to regaining control.

Visibility, delivered in real-time, is what we offer here at Absolute. Absolute DDS offers true visibility into the endpoint: the device, the data it contains, the data held in the cloud, and even the applications themselves. Identify risk conditions (such as unusual user or device activity) and receive a notification if these conditions occur. Scan for sensitive data on the endpoint or on cloud storage applications and tailor your security response based on the results. Validate the status of complementary security applications such as encryption, anti-malware, and SCCM with an automatic zero-touch reinstallation if these applications are tampered with.

In our new whitepaper, 3 Benefits of Adopting Device Analytics in Schools, we explore how you can use Absolute DDS for more than just data security. Using the advanced metrics in Absolute DDS, you can can help measure the effectiveness of your technology investments and optimize your device use.
