Symantec recently released their Internet Security Threat Report for 2011 assessing the global state of Internet security. Though we're already more than half way into 2012, an assessment of the trends can help us predict what we may be seeing in the future.

There are some interesting and shocking findings in the report, including:

  • Over 5.5 billion malware attacks were blocked in 2011 (81% increase over 2010)
  • Web based attacks increased by 36%
  • 4,500 new web based attacks each day.
  • 403 million new variants of malware were created in 2011 (41% increase of 2010)
  • SPAM volumes dropped by 13% in 2011
  • Mobile vulnerabilities continued to rise, with 315 discovered in 2011
  • 1.1 million identities were exposed per data breach

The idea of mobile threats increasing is not new, many past reports have dealt with just that (read here for one).
