Absolute Software Computer Security Survey

In September 2007, Absolute Software commissioned Research Concepts to survey Network World research panelists from companies with more than 100 employees. Respondents were asked about their attitudes towards computer security. Some highlights are listed below.

Approximately what percentage of employees at your organization do you estimate consistently follow corporate policies regarding data and computer security?

  • 1% believe that all employees consistently follow policy  
  • 11% believe that 90 percent of employees consistently follow policy
  • 3% believe that no one in their organization consistently follow policy

Has your organization experienced a data security breach in the past?

  • 27% believe their company has experienced a data security breach in the past
  • 50% believe they have not experienced a data security breach in the past
  • 23% do not know whether they have experienced a data breach or not

 
Who do you think commits most incidents of data security breaches?

  • 72% believe that employees are responsible for the most incidents
  • 18% believe that non-employees such as contractors commit most incidents
  • 10% do not know who commits the most incidents of data security breach

  • 34% believe employees are involved in computer theft

  • 64% believe a significant data breach will result in loss of credibility
  • 57% are concerned with legal expenses
  • 40% believe it will cause damage to their brand image

How much do you think each data breach incident could cost your company?

  • 16% believe it will cost $1 million or more
  • 20% believe it will cost around $100,000
  • 22% believe it will cost around $10,000
