Absolute Software recommends taking the following precautions to prevent laptop computer theft:

Use cable locks on laptops as visual deterrents. Truth be told, most cable locks can be ripped off the plastic exterior of a laptop with a strong tug. Cable locks are therefore akin to ink-filled garment security tags in clothing stores: they leave a mark when removed by force, but are ineffective at preventing many thefts.   

Keep laptops inconspicuous on your person. Laptops should be carried in inconspicuous carrying cases, such as backpacks or tote bags, instead of tell-tale laptop bags.

Avoid leaving unsecured notebooks unattended. Lock them in cupboards, notebook carts or other secure facilities when not in use. If they must be left in a vehicle – and this is highly discouraged – they should be covered up or locked in the trunk.

Lock it and pocket the key. Close and lock your office door (or dorm or bedroom) whenever you leave your laptop in sight. Remember: out of sight, out of mind.

Discourage theft by publicizing the use of Computrace. Alert potential thieves to the fact that you use, or your organization uses, Computrace® asset tracking and recovery software. If thieves think that they might be caught, they will be less likely to steal a laptop.

Engrave your name and phone number into the laptop. Thieves usually steal laptops to immediately sell them for whatever profit they can get. If your name and number are emblazoned on it, the laptop will be less desirable to steal.

Never check your laptop as luggage. Laptops should be taken as carry-on luggage, but be aware that thieves have been known to take advantage of travelers at check-in, as they will attempt to swap briefcases coming out of the x-ray machine!
