Absolute Rewrites a Likely Story for University Student
Plausible alibi for possession of stolen goods no match for computer theft recovery software
When a young woman enrolled in the Criminal Justice program at a university in Connecticut, she expected to study crime – not experience it first-hand. But a rash of thefts during one weekend in February 2007 resulted in computers, jewelry and other valuables being stolen from numerous dorm rooms. Among other things, the young woman had her Dell Latitude laptop computer and purse stolen.
Fortunately, the student’s computer was protected by Computrace® LoJack® for Laptops by Absolute Software. When she discovered her laptop was gone she reported the theft to local law enforcement then placed a call to Absolute Software.
LoJack for Laptops is a theft protection service that tracks, locates and recovers laptop and desktop computers. Software installed on the computer works behind the scenes to silently and securely contact the Absolute Monitoring Center, and if stolen, reports its location using any internet connection.
Within a few days, the student’s stolen computer began reporting its location over the Internet, and Absolute Software’s Theft Recovery Team forwarded the information to local law enforcement. When police visited the address, they questioned a woman in possession of the stolen laptop, who eventually relinquished it but insisted she had purchased the used computer on the street from an unknown person.
The woman’s alibi was plausible enough – until later that day, when another of the stolen computers appeared online at the exact same IP address. The home promptly received a return visit from the police, and three more stolen computers were seized from the premises, along with purses, wallets and other valuables allegedly stolen from the dorm rooms. Charges have been laid, and the investigation continues.
