Absolute Software Helps Police Recover Missing Laptop for Florida Student
When Florida Gulf Coast University student Travis Clair returned to class from a break in February 2007, the room was empty and his computer was nowhere to be found. Fortunately, he had installed Computrace® LoJack® for Laptops computer theft recovery software, so he knew to report the theft to the University Police Department and then contact the Absolute Theft Recovery Team.
When the stolen computer accessed the Internet, the Theft Recovery Team tracked its precise location and notified the FGCU Police. Sergeant Cindy Collins of the FGCU PD called Clair to ask him if he recognized the name of a woman in possession of the stolen machine. Surprisingly, he recognized the name as that of the classmate he had asked to ‘safeguard’ his laptop before leaving on break!
Sgt. Collins visited the residence and the computer was soon back in Clair’s hands. Laptop theft is the second-most frequent crime, just after identity theft, according to FBI
estimates from 2006. Laptop theft is an increasingly serious issue on college campuses across North America, according to a 2005 Daily Nexus report.
Clair was completely satisfied with the service he received from Absolute Software. “I would absolutely recommend this product to others to protect their laptops. This is the best product I’ve ever purchased. It’s worth every dollar spent!”
Sergeant Collins agrees: “We have lots of laptops stolen from campus and I never knew you could do all this! We’re getting laptops in our police cars and I want Computrace on them.”
